Prince Charming and the BeastA Poem by Ryan GreenhamA story about the search for love and disappointing resultsYou grew up with the stories about love, the ones that sounded pure and photogenic But the grandeur of fairy tales were just that, and the real stories never had a happy ending Yet soon it was your time to embark on a quest, to don the armor of Prince Charming and all its charm Love would always find you, they said And it did, but it would never last Women found you, and you found them You thought you could whisk them away with you You played the dutiful role of Prince Charming, holding their sorrows at bay with your shield But as time went on, damsels in distress changed, revealing themselves to be witches in disguise The spells they placed on you turned your heart to stone, and you lost your willingness to love And then somewhere down the line, you became the Beast A hideous monster, a blight, women avoided you like the plague You went looking through digital forests, searching for the love of a stranger But the same old story played out, scorns of an old love too heavy to move on, flames of an old love too alluring to resist, or another prince came riding around the corner What happened to you? Did someone put a curse on you? Now you sit alone in your castle, wondering when your beauty will come But that's just a fairy tale, and so you ask yourself, can there truly be love out there for a Beast?
