Disconnected From Messenger

A Poem by Alex Hutchinson
"

What does it feel like to lose all belief in yourself?

"

It’s the sorrow of being untouched

By hand, by sound of voice

Reflected

It’s a wound within the chest

A throbbing ache

Regretted

It’s a dense fog of the soul

Succumbing to bad posture

The body language of one who knows

Only how to falter

It’s the beckoning gloom of endless night

The tireless wake of the surf

It’s a shelf stocked with memoirs that gave up the fight

Fear of a premature birth

It’s sitting alone

Cast aside

By one’s own expectations

It’s choosing to cry

Without knowing why

The pity your only salvation

As someone who's shelve is filled with memoirs, and even my own sits there, unfinished. I understood this piece. Succumbing to bad posture and dreaming of the flesh that shall only be read through the words of a cold computer screen. Endless nights that will never be fulfilled by the one thing that can truly make me feel whole.

A remarkable description of Depression or Bipolar Syndrome. You hit it on the nailhead. I love your usage of interesting vocabulary-it grabs the heart.

`Succumbing to bad posture
The body language of one who knows
Only how to falter`
this is very well observed...
`It's` (x7) - maybe for impact, but 1 unabbreviated `It is` would add something:
It is choosing...

this works as it sounds and feels like a bad place to be...

This a wonderful poem, the descriptive quality of that unnamed longing is excellent... "it is the sorrow of being untouched..." and the rest is very powerful, loved it.

I really like this Alex. Hell is still painful, even when it's self-inflicted.

Now this, I can identify with. The defeat that nobody else can see, the perfectionist's sense of failure. The desire of one, withdrawn, for comfort and the inability to seek it. A glimpse behind the faade of everyday.

Very nicely done.

Apart from understanding the actual emotion, I truly think the words you've used echo the feeling expressed and, phrases such as 'It's the beckoning gloom of the endless night', 'It's the dense fog of the soul' are precise yet poignant - a few words that say so much.
