Chapter 3

Chapter 3

A Chapter by Kurayami

“Hey, Tiffany,” I said as I sat down next to her in form time.

“Hey,Yvette. Is Edward your boyfriend?” Tiffany asked in a hush tone.

“No,” I said.

“Do you like him? I mean seriously, you seemed so attached to him and him to you,” Tiffany said.

I sighed, “No, Tiffany. It just seems that he needs lots of help is all. He would probably hang out with his new friends soon.”

I started reading. Edward’s late to form class. I wonder if he would be able to find his way here. He really should make some male friends soon or else people will start gossiping, in which case, I do not want that to happen.

Edward sat down next to me as the bell rang. “Good morning,Yvette,” he said.

“Good morning,” I answered. Sean sat down opposite Tiffany and started writing something in his notebook.

The rest of the day went smoothly. Edward made friends with some of the guys in class and started hanging out with them. It was a relief but for some reason, I felt a pang of unhappiness as he started to hang out with his new friends. I told myself that I was probably a bit tired and that I’ll need to get some rest soon when I get home after school.

Edward adapted to the new technology quite fast. He’s already got a phone and knows how to use it. We swapped our numbers. He promised me that he’ll call when he got home.

It’s been a week now since he got here. We are meeting at the park this afternoon to talk more. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a date.

I put on my sweater and jeans and walked to the park.

Edward was already there when I got to the park. He smiled when I sat down next to him. We were silent for a while.

“Are you going to go back to the Victorian era, the time that you are from? Wouldn't your parents miss you?” I asked, suddenly feeling afraid of his answer.

“Not for a while. I’m considering it but being here makes me happier. I don’t know why but I will figure it out soon. I might stay here for a term, that way, if I’m returning at least it wouldn't look weird. Nothing will be certain. The duties that I will bear when I got home are huge,” he said, his face looking sad and depressed. I wanted to comfort him but I also don’t want to cross the line.

“Maybe you’ll want to go back to your parents and explain it all to you parents so they won’t be worrying about you,” I suggested.

“No,” his voice was fierce, “They will definitely take the object away and then I can’t come back here anymore.”

He looked like he’s going to cry.

“It’s okay,” I said. I don’t really know what to say.

Then we left the park. I went back home and he said he’s going to the library.

I called Tiffany as I got home. My parents are working. They don’t like to enjoy themselves.

“Tiffany? I need to talk to you,” I said.

“What’s wrong? You sound depressed and may I say, a little sad,” she said over the phone.

So I told her about Edward. How he got here and why he was so weird in the first place. The object that he found in Victorian time and using it to get here, accidentally. Tiffany listened quietly over the phone.

“That is strange but it makes sense. I still don’t get it though, why do you sound depressed?” my best friends asked.

“I don’t know. I’m tired, I guess,” I said.

“Listen; let’s meet at the cafe in ten minutes, okay? We’ll grab a coffee or something and we’ll sort this out, okay?” she said.

“Sure,” I said. It sounded like a good idea. She will know what to do and maybe I’ll feel better after it.

I grabbed my purse and phone and walked out the house to the cafe.

I ordered a hot cocoa drink and sat down in a seat, waiting for Tiffany. I was early by three minutes.

Tiffany turned up after a minute. She ordered coffee and sat down opposite me.

“I've come to a conclusion as to why you are so depressed,” Tiffany said as our drinks were delivered to us.

“So, what is your theory?” I asked. I hadn't really expected this.

“You like him,” Tiffany said, simply.

I gasped. That was really straight-forward but not what I expected.

“Don’t say “no”, Yvette. You may have not realized it but it is the answer. You are afraid that he will leave forever,” Tiffany continued, “Why don’t you just ask him out? It will be better that way. At least you’ll know if he likes you, even just a little bit.”

“I can’t,” I said, “There is no way I’m asking him out. He sees things in a different way. I know he doesn't like me that way. It’ll be fine. We’ll just be friends and when it comes to the time that he decides to leave, I’ll wish him well.” I took a sip of my hot cocoa. It tastes good.

“Alright,” Tiffany said. A mischievous smile played on her lips.

We left the cafe. I walked her home. Then I went home myself thinking about what she had sad. Can I really like him and not know? I shook my head. I’m over thinking it all.
