Inseparable

Inseparable

A Poem by Alice Kaparelli

We sat down in your fiery living room,

And turned on the TV.

We watched a sad movie

About two best friends.

Then one died.

You looked me in the eye and said

“We’re best friends,”

“Nothing could tear us apart.”

And I believed you.

Nothing could tear us apart.

We played in your muddy backyard

Pushing each other on a rope swing,

Standing on the edge of a dirty sandbox.

I smiled and thought,

Nothing could tear us apart.

As fourth grade came around,

These girls would laugh at you

And shoot you down.

But I was always there to lift you back up

Nothing could tear us apart.

But you kept going back to them

No matter what they said

Or what they did to you.

I tried to hold onto what you said years ago,

That nothing could tear us apart.

But then you left me,

You left me for them.

You abandoned me

And you didn’t seem to care.

Could nothing tear us apart?

But now, three years later,

You act like I’m invisible.

The one that died in the movie,

A phantom of the past,

A dream.

A long time ago I thought that

Nothing could tear us apart.

I was wrong.
