Broken Promises

Broken Promises

A Poem by violetlotuss

The sun filtering softly

Through summer and autumn leaves,

Bright green, happy, and alive,

Before they fade to yellow, orange and brown.

Soft wispy clouds floating

Lazily across a June sky,

Bright white and feathery,

Before they swirl and fade away.

Soft padding of bare feet on hot pavement

While we wander aimlessly along,

Before the pavement grows cold

With the first breath of winter.

That smell, the smell of the woods,

The trees surrounding us like friends,

The pine needles strewn across the ground,

The moss growing beneath our feet and

The stream bubbling nearby.

The smell of earth

Dirt

Leaves

Wildflowers

Nature, surrounding us

Like a protective blanket.

A trail in the woods,

Enticing and beseeching,

Begging us to follow it

Toward a destination that felt like home to me,

Before it got dark and we had to turn around.

Every sight, every breath

Every step, every laugh,

Every picture, broken promise,

Memory and ache of the heart

Reminds me of this,

Reminds me of you,

And who you - we - used to be.
