Pleading the 5th

Pleading the 5th

A Story by Lauren N. Rodriguez

Sometimes it's just easier to block out the world- such a painless act to sit there numb than to spend another second in heartache. Would it hurt less if we weren't acting? Will it all disappear if we wish our worries away? Humans are so ignorant- So fascinating and awe-inspiring even...but we dream at all the wrong times, always begging to be forgotten in sweet slumber for a second more than to face the startling nightmares of reality. Are we all like that? Do we all live in this surrealism like the walking dead- exposed to life without truly living? I suppose again it will all lead back to math! Add this, subtract that and it all equals happiness. But multiply strife, divide the love, and what will you have left?

We are all closed in. We sit in our graves greedily carving our names onto our headstones, preparing to leave life as quickly as we can and leave no explanation as to why it was never worth living. Check your closets for old skeletons, look under the floor boards for unwanted ghosts and hungry demons and the abandoned secrets we thought had vanished. As much as we think we know someone, we'll never even really know our own selves. Shapes, we are all shapes and colors; no definition of right and wrong, just variations and...distortions; simple complexities and complex simplicities. We often make the best of the worse and yet, make the worst of the best. Our hunger is never satisfied...nothing keeps us content. Shall we plead the 5th in the end? Give no response to God and just beg insanity? I mean, that's what we all are- insane; lost in the destruction of our very own hands.
