Second Date

Second Date

A Story by Vini Rose
"

Rose, a divorced women in her late forties is getting ready for her second date.

"
The clock radio is ON and is playing an unheard country folk out loud. Sun's warm rays are peeping through the satin pink curtain warming up Rose's wrinkled face. Her hand searched for the radio button and turned it OFF with a pat. It seemed as if today it's playing way louder than usual.
She felt a gush of joy and excitement, pulled off her quill off and sat up on the bed. Rose grabbed her cellphone kept on the table beneath the bed and checked for any texts or missed calls. The cellphone is showing no signs of any, so she kept it back and slid herself from the bumpy cot to start her morning routine.
She looked at her lovely violet satin dress kept on her open closet. Even though it only took less an hour for her morning routine, she spend nearly two hours for her make up. Rose felt excited and thrilled getting ready for her second date. She put on the foundation carefully in the hope of covering her deepening wrinkles, ran eyeliner that showed off her skill, applied eye shadows, and put on the gorgeous earrings she bought exclusively for today. After done with makeup, she stood in front of full length mirror fixed on her closet door. Rose was very convinced, she was looking gorgeous today.
While driving to 'The people's Cafe', her cellphone rang. Grabbing it from the dashboard and keeping an eye on the road, she pressed it close to her ear with one hand while steering the car with the other.
"Hey Rose, this is Joey", a very gentle young voice on the other end said.
"Hey Joey, I am on my way. Sorry the weather's not great today. I might get late by 15 minutes", said Rose with a joyful voice.
"It's okay. See, I called you to inform that by my boss just asked me to immediately report to her office. It's a part and parcel of a freelance reporter you know".
"Okay, so", Rose said with a trembling voice.
"I've to say sorry, I can't come today", Joey said in an apologetic tone
A deep disappointment hit Rose
"Oh it's okay, I was actually about to reach there you know, It's okay we can have it later" said Rose trying her best covering sucking up her sorrow.
"I will call you back next week, bye for now. It was so nice meeting you Rose". says Joey's voice
"Yeah me too. Alright, bye" Rose pulled car to the side of the road and stopped it.
She was sure he was lying and there won't be a call from him ever again for a second date.
