HEAVEN DENIED
Lilting music cascades its chords,
Over my ever eager soul,
Gossamer silk like a lover's caress,
Teasing my skin to exquisite pleasure,
Reality straddled and brought to heel,
Awake,asleep,both or neither ?
Heaven opened and I dared a glance,
Like a voyeur in the dark,
Awed to see life's reward,
Splayed before me,
Her treasures my every desire,
As if plucked like a rose from the very depth of my mind,
My heart pounds in my chest,
Lest I am found and made to leave,
Musical laughter from cherubic lips,
Tempt me to boldness,
Surely I would be welcome,
If not ,why was I here?
"You are here"said a voice laced with knowledge,
Dripping with age"to see what your choices have denied you"
"Your penance ,for decisions you have made,
For people you have hurt, for tears you have wreaked,"
Each softly spoken word,
Like a stake piercing my chest.
Her words barely whispered,
Chilling in their finality rendered me mute,
Judgement had been passed,
And the gavel spoke ,its verdict ordained,
My actions in life their impact ricocheting into death,
As the gates closed and penance was wrought.
