Fading Footsteps

Fading Footsteps

A Poem by Vidya Bacchus
"

this is about being your own worst enemy

"

                     Fading Footsteps
Whispers of memory strum  their chords,
Over my  befuddled mind,
Echoes of  emotion tantalize my  senses,
Your scent so familiar, washes over me,
Wrapping me in its swirling shroud.

I know that you love me ,
The truth of this tatooed on your  eyes,
The truth  resounding in your words,
But the reality of me is never simple,
Never easy ,never permanent.

I dare not court happiness,
As my ability to sabotage myself is epic,
I trust you but I do not trust me,
For in the blink of the eye I am the sweetest angel,
Wrapping you in the haven of my wings.

But I beseech you do not blink!
Because the shrew inside that thinks I am a freak,
Will assault you with her venomous ramblings,
Drawing blood with her acidic tongue,
And you will inevitably like  all before.

Turn away with utter resignation ,
As the tears of my own summoning,
Fall unheeding ,their course countless times charted,
It cannot be expected that I would possess the tools to love another,
When I cannot love myself with any conviction.

The above words are true wisdom. You must like yourself to have the ability to love another. Usually we are our worst enemy in the emotion and giving of love. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.

You have written my life story, Vida, and I can see from your other reviews that I am not alone in feeling that way. Why do we say the things we say? In the midst of an emotional outburst, words pour out that we have promised ourselves we will never say again. Awesome poetry!

We all have our moments of hesitation, scared to take a leap into goodness knows what, or, perhaps, afraid of making an indelible mistake. It's part of life, doubting, wondering. For some life has a stopping point where movement slows to moments rather than hours. Your post, so well written, displays the good and bad, fear or adventure. Guess in the end, the choice is personal and we have to live with it! Thank you so much for sharing such a thoughtful piece of writing.

Thank you very much sayed your words are much appreciated
Not only are we our own worst enemies, but we hurt those we love the most for no good reason. Perhaps we are frightened they are getting too close and we will reveal our inner selves to them. Perhaps we really are frightened of commitment. It is unfortunately human nature though. Pushing away someone you love for no good reason....and then hating yourself for it afterwards. Well written...so very emotive. Lydi**

Thank you so much lydi for your lovely review.
We are too often our own worst enemy as we are prone to set up ourselves for failure, broken relationships, bonds shattered as we are so filled with self loathing and mistrust of what we might do that we are afraid to trust another, and thus push those that love us away, having walls built so high that no one can cross over them.......I can relate to this, and the way you are able to express it in your words tells me that you feel this in the depths of your spirit!

Your words are filled with revelation of what will come when another tries to get to close. From an angel to a shrew in a heartbeat - a heartbeat that craves love but is so afraid to let another join it!
Excellent!!

Words wouldn't do this justice, Vidya, but I'll try. I take my hat off to your firm grasp of character, psyche, our foibles, inconsistencies and idiosyncracies, and creating lifelike images with words. Bally marvellous. Wow.

..."But the reality of me is never simple,
Never easy ,never permanent.

I dare not court happiness,
As my ability to sabotage myself is epic,"...

And then there's the title, spot on: "Fading footsteps", what imagery, I can only liken it to an aperitif which tastes far better (i.e. it makes total sense) after enjoying the main course.
Thank you for such a wonderful poem.
