First CrushA Poem by Victor GammaThe memory of a First Crush - self explanatoryFIRST CRUSH In the misty past I left a letter that somehow found its way to You. That long ago when the world was empty of heart-stopping madness I shared my swing. When I knew only candy and crayons I gave up a prize which kids fought for The unthinkable, I shared it this time With the girl of the long-dark hair The one that smiled back On contest day she cheered my race Cheering only for me. A dozen faces and screams silenced by one my breast held the million hearts of a champion that day. So I did the only thing I could I shared my swing. For the first time ever That cloudless hot recess Out in the bright yellow dirt Away from old lady glasses I shared my swing with that dark-haired girl in my class with the white beret and the blue knee-dress who cheered the race of her champion I have lived without her now these many years of withered leaf-dust Hateful crime of our times having been through it all And the others who’ve taken her place They said it was silly. Then why do I see the girl on that hot blue day and still feel my little boy nature become a curiously melted mystery like the Hershey I left on the porch, that drowned reason and made me give up my swing? © 2020 Victor GammaReviews
