DIVORCE

Divorce

The nights were long

In the opposite poles

We inhabited.

Once, you could not tell us apart

Time crept on eon legs

It was everything or nothing

What everyone dreaded and avoided

Those were no tame days, I tell you

Though rather unreal

You can do everything, they lied.

A long war followed

Nothing happened and my body went limp

the air thick with hate

You retired early from the game

Though the song went on forever

Nothing to say or do

Though the day went on forever

She left me at the party and said, “Goodbye now for good.”

“Go ahead and blame me,” said the she-villain

On Saturday a river of tears drowned a forgotten day

Only I came in to the empty apartment

But the house did not exist, slowly I saw very clearly now

knowing nothing but the end

This is everything and more.

A glacial time was had by all

And the elephant never forgets

The façade that I came back for

turned into a long war,

A long war

My past was tame by comparison

And, yes the song went on forever

It was divorce

A life for a vacation

I did not want to try

In a long war

A long war

It must have been awful

The old man said

that horrific cleavage of two souls entwined

Only a child knows how much,

Nothing known, nothing seen

Whisked away like some errant balloon

To unplanned lands and places

Thank you for the thoughtful review. "Many are the uses of adversity," said the wise Bard.
This one overflows with pain. The imagery is masterful and it spares us none of the agony of a bitter split. Indeed, it sounds like "a long war." More painful than the actual separation, though, is the realization of loneliness the speaker encounters after returning to what had once been a happy home after the last shot has been fired. The last lines express the enormity of the void he now faces.
