Alone in the Quiet Woods

Alone in the Quiet Woods

A Poem by Vic Frederick

When I was just a boy

My father took me hunting

"To make a man out of me"

He helped me into a tree stand

I waited for the sun to rise

With my father far away

Just me and Mother Nature

Alone in the quiet woods

This was my favorite part

Being hidden and undetected

Waiting for the warm sunlight

To climb over the mountains

A large buck broke the silence

Just as the sun broke the horizon

I could see him walking cautiously

Alone in the quiet woods

I was in perfect position

And my heart began to pound

As I raised my weapon quietly

To place the animal in my sights

But when the moment came to kill

I felt compelled to stop

And let the white tail walk away

Alone in the quiet woods

I never told my father

He would have surely been upset

And thought me less a man

For letting the big buck go

But little does he know

About the man that I've become

The man that I became that day

Alone in the quiet woods

There is a saying: Character is what we do when no one else is looking. Alone in the quiet woods not only built your personal character but also your poetic character.
One way to improve the poem would be to work on the rhythm so that it mimics the pounding of your heart when you were scared s#!+less.
