Musings of a RefridgeratorA Story by Ruby
How many times have you seen, whilst watching some form of film, the opening and closing of a fridge? It’s a beautiful shot. It creates a sense of normality, but also has a sense of artistry. A perfect frame, and lighting of course is abundant. But it’s beauty does not stand merely shallow, as the workings of it’s contents can be very revealing of a character. The fridge in itself is mesmerising. I’ve seen people stand in front of it for hours searching for a food that they are unable to see, but which remarkably sits in the very centre of their vision. They are blinded by the catastrophic light that is an open fridge. Occasionally I search for things I know must be there. I convince myself I am blinded by the fridge, and find after shutting and reopening and searching and repeating this process again and again, that what I’m looking for isn’t there. In some rare cases I discover I was not hungry in the first place. I wonder at this habit. This constant searching. I do it while I’m content, and while I’m filled with other emotions entirely. Boredom is common, granted, but also sadness, anger, frustration… the fridge calms me down somehow. I know I don’t need anything from it. I know that if I did it would bear no grudge to me in taking it. The mere action of questioning, of being in a state in which I step onto a road of purpose whilst having none, delights me in a subliminal fashion I’m not at all sure of. Appreciate the fridge in your life. Empty or full, in tact or broken, white or rusted or covered in magnets – It will stand by you. It’s door will always be open to you, if only you will open it.
