A Chapter by Kasaundra

I rolled into the driveway and my mother was standing in the front door way with her toe tapping.

“Daniella Rose, where were you all day?” I was sick of lying; it was time to tell her how it was.

“I was at the courthouse talking to the district attorney.” I wasn’t going to hide the truth anymore and I was going to let it all run free. “Before you say anything else to me you have to understand that I’m taking a stand and being a witness to the crime I was a part of.”

“What the hell are you talking about; you’re not doing anything of that sort!” The sound of her voice sent chills down my spine but I wasn’t going to back down this time.

“I’ll do what I want, this is my life! I’m nineteen!”

“As long as you live under my roof you will abide by my rules, you hear me?” she took a step towards me,.

“Yes, I hear you loud and clear.” I smiled at her. “I’ll be in my room for a bit then I’m going back to Ami’s.” I walked right past her and down the hall into my room.

I heard her scream, “I don’t think so, Daniella Rose.” I grabbed a suitcase and threw some clothes in it along with a toothbrush and toothpaste. I grabbed my cellphone charger,  my laptop and its charger, some makeup and stuffed them all in the suitcase. Thank God, it was large enough to fit everything. I opened my door and out I wheeled the bag.

“Where the hell do you think you are going?”

“To live my own life, for once.” I pushed beside her and out the front door I went. I walked down the street towards Ami’s house and didn’t even look back as my mother screamed at me.

I arrived at Aim’s house in about 15 minutes. I walked up to the front door and knocked. I knew her parents weren’t home because their car wasn’t in the driveway. I knocked,

“What are you doing here? I thought your mother wanted you home.”

“You were right Ami; I can’t recover in an abusive house.”

            “What happened?”

“I told my mom I was at the courthouse today and she told me I couldn’t testify as long as I lived under her roof, and now I’m here.”

“We’re going to have a lot of explaining to do to my mother, but I am here for you, and I won’t let you down this time.” I grabbed her and hugged her, I didn’t want to let go either. For once I was going to be able to live my own life and do what needs to be done to make everything all right, I was ecstatic.
