Everyday Heroes

Everyday Heroes

A Poem by Vanessa Pavelock

From the rightmost corner of my eye to
the left, I see the glorious and the
hideous-- the triumphant, warm victories
won by everyday heroes who can barely
get all they need to survive. I see the
man standing on the platform alone, an
awkward grin across his face, hiding the
discomfort of the backpack that pulls and
twists at his spinal cord. I watch as he
raises his heavy hands up towards his head,
waving them around in an empty motion
as he swats away the flies.

yes, what we see on and near the subway...those heroes just trying to survive from day to day...the backpack..his life carried on his shoulders...swatting the flies, because they are there or because he just thinks they are there.

so sad...i do relate to this...i was born in NY and often rode the subway myself.

really visual piece, i like your style...you don't waste words...you make great use of each.
