COMING OUT

COMING OUT

A Poem by Valerie Dean Belew
"

THIS IS THE THEME SONG TO COMING OUT WITH CHRISTOPHER, A NOVEL, NOT FINISHED, BUT POSTED HERE AT THE CAFE, WHAT HAS BEEN WRITTEN SO FAR.

"

COMING OUT (Theme song to Coming Out with Christopher)

Most of your life you’ve tried hard to be someone else
It’s a hard road ahead when you can’t accept yourself
It’s time to make that big decision
And it’s much too hard to face
Still, you know you’ll never be who they say you should
And you’ve felt so out of place

And I’ll be lovin you until the day I die
But we can’t go on with this face that you try to hide
And we can’t go on with this mask that you hide behind
I love you just enough to say goodbye
Goodbye to you
But it’s breaking my heart in two

Goodbye to you is tearing my world in two
I know how your folks will see the thing you do
But there are those of us who care
Behind the mask you wear
Goodbye to you
I know what its put you through

And I wish I could make your heartbreak flow like a dream
But I know that it’s never as easy as it seems
I still wish I could be your woman
I’ve even wished I could be your man
But I’m who I am
So I’ll do the only thing I can

Goodbye to you is tearing my world in two
I’ll be on my way because I won’t belong with you
But when it’s time to take a stand
I’ll be there to hold your hand
And I’ll be a friend to help you see it through

Goodbye to you is tearing my world in two
This double life is beating us black and blue
There are those who will always care
So shed the mask you wear
Goodbye to you
Now, do what you’ve got to do
Goodbye to you is tearing my world in two
Goodbye to you
I know it’s breaking your heart too
Goodbye to you
Just do what you’ve gotta do

Author's Note

Valerie Dean Belew
This is the theme song to Coming Out with Christopher; it was written to a former lover who felt the need to pretend to be someone he could not be. I accompanied him for the big talk with his Catholic family, and his coming out process. He lives happily with his long time mate today, and I get cards on holidays.

This is very nice Valerie, you loved Christopher for who he was not for who others thought he should be.

This is very beautiful and sad when I think of all those who have felt forced to try to be someone they are not, just to please family, and/or religion. Christopher was very fortunate to have you there when he really needed a friend to lean on. You are a very compassionate, lady and I am honored to have the chance to get to know you through your writing and as a friend here on WC.

Your lyrics flow so easily. I am constantly amazed at the way you can equate each experience you've had through life in song.
I enjoyed it! And having read some of Coming Out, i of course 'get it' without the explaination at the end.
