there is a little boy and his skin is darker than mine. there is a little boy and his potbelly sticks out from the pencil lines of his ribcage. there is a little boy who is so hungry he is dying. there is a little boy whose mother isn't there anymore. there is a little boy whose water is flavored with chemicals. there is a little boy whose barefoot canvas is painted with scrapes and infection. there is a little boy with hollow hands and skeleton eyes. there is a little boy who does not know what hope means.

this is a girl whose skin burns red in the sun. this is a girl who eats three meals a day. this is a girl with leftovers in her refrigerator. this is a girl who sits in photographs on her grandmother's mantel. this is a girl who stains her tongue with caffeine every day. this is a girl who chooses to dye her feet with grass stains. this is a girl with dreamy eyes and healing hands. this is a girl who is learning what compassion is.
