the sea is a she

the sea is a she

A Poem by valerie
"

mrs. davy jones is a klepto

"
he learned everything he knew
from his father, his old man
east coast north carolina they
lived along edges of shore & sea

he was a sailor--
no, not him, his father was.
in a little sailboat that he named
clementine; oh that boat,
he loved her more than his own wife
that's the reason for the divorce,
of course.

when he was ten--yes,
he this time, his father thirty-five
they sailed around the world together
greece madagascar taiwan australia
they found stray dogs and clementine
became an animal shelter over time

they were gone for two-and-a-half years
they had nothing to come back to
no wife no home not a care in the world
only each other and the crash of the
ocean's heartbeat collapsing
against the sides of the sailboat

with no land in sight they turned to the skies
as their map latitude and longitude
and oh, the stars at night
lighting up the world like city skyscrapers
it took his breath away
--both of theirs

yeah, they came home e-ventual-ly
moved to connecticut and made a living
operating a lighthouse from 1918
and when he went off to college in
cambridge, his dad went off to sail
to africa     all alone     just him.

and he fell in love, oh who says
you'll never find love again?
he fell in love, with the sea; he did!
and he never came back and he
married her and she took,
took her husband's name
and his heart,     she was
mrs. davy jones
