Silent

Silent

A Poem by Alex
"

A short poem on the state of the world in my opinion

"

We live in a state of silence.

We stay silent so that those we care about may speak,

May raise their voice and shout to be heard.

And then we listen.

We listen to their screams and whispers,

Their pleas and cries.

Unnoticed however, are the listeners,

Our voices diminished from the times we held ourselves back,

Held onto our opinions,

Waiting for someone to ask the question.

The question we ask them with our actions day after day.

Are you ok?

These three words are the equivalent of the switch,

The one that has been used so little that it has stuck,

And the water it held back has grown hazy,

From the poisons not only from our minds,

But also from those we listen to.

Yet it is this haze that allows to see the truths of our lives.

That there aren't happy endings or true love,

That our stories are not fairytales with a princess and knights.

Our lives are a constant reminder that people aren't perfect,

That evil is the biggest part of what we learn from fairytales.

So in an effort to counter this we hold our silence,

In the hope that by doing so we don’t ruin the illusion held,

By those who speak and dream.

Who laugh and smile.

For those people we will pretend that we are their knights,

Because we don’t want them to see the world that we see,

A world where the darkness extinguishes the light like water will a flame,

A world that we can see,

Because we live in a state of silence.

Author's Note

Alex
I know it has unorthodox stanzas but I just wrote this to get it off my mind and decided to share it. All criticism welcome.
