The Veldt

People love technology and can’t wish to live without it. For instance, In today’s society everyone has a phone. It doesn't matter where they are or what their doing, people are always on their electronic devices. Perhaps in the future everything will be done by technology. From the time people wake up till the time they go to sleep, people will spend most of their day using technology. Although in Ray Bradbury’s short story “The Veldt” we learn about a family that lives in a house that is full of technology. In this house everything is done by technology; cooking food, giving the kids a bath and even taking care of the children. However, the technology house leads the family down the wrong path. A major theme of the short story, and one that is still relevant today, is that if people are too reliant on technology then it can be dangerous

In the short story “The Veldt”, if people are too reliant on technology then it can be dangerous. First of all technology makes the characters lazy. The house that the family lives in has made them so lazy that they don’t know how to accomplish simple tasks. The house takes care of the whole family. The house brushes their teeths, cooks for them, and even keeps the kids entertained. The parents don’t feel any responsibility in taking care of their own children. Technology also breaks the relationships in the family. Unfortunately because of this technology the parents and children don’t talk to one another. The children, Wendy and Peter, spend most of their day in the nursery. The nursery is this special part of the house which brings anything you think of to life on a screen. The children love the technology house so much that they don’t even care about their parents. When Peter's dad, George, says he will be shutting the nursery down, Peter says; “I don’t think you’d better consider it” (457). This shows how Peter is now threatening his father just because he is shutting the nursery off. Finally the children believe they are not able to live without technology. Sadly when the parents shut down some of the technology in the house, the kids cry till the parents don’t turn it on again. Also to the kids, technology is more important than their parents. Even George says, “[The children] live for the nursery” (446). The nursery has taken care of the children since they were born, and now technology has become their parent. Overall technology has made a negative impact on these children.

The main theme of “The Veldt” is still relevant in today's society. Technology makes people lazy. After all, it’s because of technology people have become less active. People don’t even take the time and accomplish tasks on their own. Such as, doing even the simplest homework that is given to them. Nowadays people can search what he or she is looking for online. On the other hand, technology also breaks relationships. Sadly there isn’t as many face to face conversations with family and friends. Also there is less going out with family and friends, so the bonds between friends and family become weaker. Then again people don’t try to get to know others because they have bad communication skills. Finally, people get addicted to technology. Human beings go crazy when something precious is taken away from them. Not having technology make many people restless, meaning they can’t live without technology. Also people can’t stop constantly doing something on the web. People will waste many hours just surfing the web to find something that meets their interest. Nevertheless human beings waste most of their time on technology rather than hanging out or talking with their friends. In the end, technology has caused humans to become less interacted with one another.  

In conclusion, technology has made not only a negative impact in “The Veldt”, but also in today's society. Although technology is a huge step forward, it might end up ruining people's minds. Technology is here to make life easier but it could end up going down the wrong path. People have become so addicted to technology that they have no interest in other stuff. In other words, there is more to life then technology, people should get out more and find out more about the world he or she lives in.
