Fallen Black Prince

Fallen Black Prince

A Poem by KC

A fallen black prince,
cursed by witches to roam
Ruled the foul underbelly
of the nation
Passing judgment
from his traveling throne
Breeding anarchy
where before there was none
Fools fled before him,
and bigger fools stayed
A flick of a finger,
a toss of his head
Found men as corpses
Banished to lay
In faceless,
nameless,
graves

Those he let live were
led toward destruction
Silhouetted against the
Light of noon
Whistling an
Innocent tune
The wicked piper led them up mountaintops
And made them leap
to their doom
He called it his solemn duty
To see the evil as whipped
Slaves
To put the weary in early
Graves
To expose every sordid sin
To avenge every adulterous grin
And once he purged all he found
To begin again…

His eyes, hard, hostile, cold
Cracked, frozen ice
Turned bold little boys
to girls
Mighty men
to mice
It’s a sad thing to see
A tiny tyrant quite grown
For more often than not
The seeds of challenge
Go wisely unsown
And so
The last spark of mercy was
Finally blown
The fallen black prince
Had turned slowly to stone

Only a foolish man would
Still hope for a jubilant return
After his body had known
The hot wash of blood
The dark spray of mud
Lessons learned, prizes earned
With each victory his pyre was
methodically built
and then
Carelessly burned
Once a Poorman’s hero
He was now
Scolded, scoffed
And scorned
“Forgive me!” he pleaded
But their backs remained turned

Perhaps he’d gone too far
Too fast
Too long
If it’s a question of
Right and wrong
Is the line clearly drawn?
And if in fact there is a line
Who decides whether an act is
Unforgivable
Or merely unkind?
Which words mean nothing
And which ones bind?
Justice is crucial, but let me remind
An eye for an eye
Leaves the whole world blind
