My small townA Poem by unwrittenaliceA poem describing the feeling of leaving home and it's comforts to move on to a bigger future.I feel like everyone says they’re from a small town. But my town is so small it’s like a school reunion In every pub, Tesco, and park. A sleepy town. A town everyone thinks they would pass through like a nap But wake up 10 years later and are still in bed. I love my middle of nowhere home. With my friends that share my small-town mindset And remember the simple times of walking miles on end Just to see each other’s faces. Hot summers sat in fields, House parties of 12 friends that felt like the wildest nights we will ever have And the map of our town so small we know every winding road. I love that we know the ins and outs of each other’s lives 5 years after we have spent any time together. I love that when we ask ‘what’s new’ The expected response is ‘nothing really’ Followed by a knowing eye roll and warm laugh. I love my simple town. But find myself wincing whenever I drive back to visit my family Counting down the hours to leave again My feet physically restless in its presence. I love the people in my town but I feel too big Too grown Too much For its sleepy acceptance. I will always love my small dot on the map That I call my own and owe myself to. But now I find myself feeling out of place Uneasy and unaware of what it expects from me Who to be, how to act, what to want. I love my small town But I love the open space of my future. I love the broadness of its skies and the warmth of its energy. My small town to me is the starter And now I’m ready for my main. Hungry for its substance and craving my fullness. As much as I love my small town and its deep sleep I think I’m ready to wake. © 2023 unwrittenaliceAuthor's Note
