Chapter one

Lightning, snow and ice, fire, controlling plants and animals, and all this knowledge. It’s crazy. I thought to myself as we waited for my blood tests to get back.

“Everything is going to be okay, Layla.” My mom said.

“Mom they experimented on me.” I responded. “Everything's not okay.”

I looked out the window to see a rose right in front of me.

“The doctor is gonna find out what’s wrong with you.” My mom said.

“I know.” I said.

Dr. Michel walked in and said, “Your blood tests were off the charts. No other doctor on this floor can explain. They’re amazing.”

“Just tell us what’s wrong.” My mom demanded.

“They found snowflakes in her blood cells.”

“SNOWFLAKES!” Me and my mom screamed.

“Yes, no other doctor can explain it.”

“What did they do to me?” I said as I started to cry.

“Layla, it’s okay. It’s an amazing power.” Dr. Michel said.

“What power?” My mom said.

“Layla look at that dead rose on the table. Think it to be alive.”

“Okay.” I said.

I looked at the rose and imagined it alive. It slowly came back alive, and it had a little snow on it.

“Layla.” My mom said. “What’s going on? Did you know?”

“Mom I’m sorry, but I found out when I was in the facility.” I said. “The day I escaped, I froze the chains and they broke.”

“But you told the police different.” My mom said.

“I know. That  was to keep me from being experimented on. Again.”

“But you’re supposed to tell the police the exact thing that happened. You’re on a major grounding missy.”

“But mom I did it to protect myself from getting hurt again.”

“I don’t care! You could get arrested!”

“Mom I know! I don’t want to get experimented on! YOU’RE NOT LISTENING!”

“I’m trying to talk to you! YOU’RE THE ONE NOT LISTENING!”

“Hey you two stop it!” Dr. Michel said to my mom and me.

“Yes ma’am.” I said.

“You’re still grounded.” My mother said.

“But-”

“No ifs, thens, or buts about it. You’re grounded.”

“Okay now we can actually get started.” Dr. Michel said. “Layla, can you promise me something?”

“Yes ma’am.” I said.

“Evil people will come after you, you know that right?”

“Yes ma’am.”

“They’ll do anything to get your powers. For example, they might take your mom to get you to surrender to them.”

“I know.”

“Do you promise to always protect your city?”

“Wait did you say city?” My mom asked.

“Yes mom she did, and I promise.”

“Okay, you will need to protect your city Layla. People will need your help.”

“I kn-”

“No you won’t be protecting your city. You will be in your room away from people.”

“Mom! I can’t just sit around and do nothing about these people attacking my people.”

“Mrs. Patton, she is right. She can’t just sit around and do nothing while her city is being attacked.”

“Yes she can! Layla let’s go!”

My mom takes my arm and we walk out the door. I then yell, “I promise Dr. Michel!”
