Bite me and Die- THREEA Story by Stef Outsiders-THREE- Ismael fell
into a deep slumber, a little too deep for the doctor liking. Ismael hardly
felt Doctor Reeves lift her wrist and felt her pulse, she looked at the time on
her watch and perched her lips to one side. Ismael’s pulse was fast but she was
dreaming, she tossed and turned while the doctor held her. Julian stood behind
reeves and observed Ismael. “It’s happening again,” Julian voice
broke a little. Ismael called out for her sister and her mum, begun to
furiously tossing in her bed. Tears poured over Julian’s cheeks, it disturbed
her to see Ismael this way. She could not bear watching but felt had to. As her
only Aunt, she needed to be with her. Reeves held Ismael from the shoulders
until she calmed; it had worsened tonight, the fits were more furious than
ever. Reeves had no choice but to sedate Ismael. “You’ll have to hold her- Julian!” Reeves
commanded. Julian could not move and just stood there, frozen stiff. “Julian- this has to be done. She needs
you!” Reeves screeched. Julian snapped out of it and climbed onto the bed next
to Ismael. “She’s burning up!” “I need you to be really firm now” Reeves
tapped the syringe and inserted quickly. It took seconds for the sudation to
kick in and Ismael begun to calm in Julian’s arms. “She’ll be sedated till morning. Be ready
with some water and a slice of toast, I’ll be back at 0700 hours,” Doctor
Reeves told Julian. Julian was too busy cuddling Ismael to hear her. Before the
medicine took over completely, Ismael whispered for Hannah again. Julian hushed
her and wiped her cheek, she felt something wet on her hand. Julian gasped and
looked over Ismael’s face; a tear of blood came from her eye again. This was a
regular occurrence, something that doctor Reeves could never understand or
Julian. Dean
came into the bedroom and Nodded at Reeves on her way out, he saw Julian
cradling Ismael, then the blood. “Julian-“he said softly. Julian peered up,
tears glinted in the light and it hurt to see his wife witnessing this every
time. He wished he could take her place
but would not seem right. “When will it stop Dean” Julian voice
finally broke, she rocked back and forth. Dean could not answer; he knew this might
never stop. In the
morning, Ismael stirred and her eyes felt heavy. She heard someone, it sounded
mumbled and the mumbling continued. “Ismael can you hear me?” Doctor Reeves
said softly. Ismael managed to open an eye, her version was cloudy. “Can you hear me?” Reeves asked
again. Ismael reached out with her hand,
touched Reeve’s face, and pressed her fingers to her lips. “Please you sound like a bad frequency,”
She spoke grainy at Reeves due to a dry throat.
Reeves smiled and placed a cup of water in her hand. She helped Ismael
sit up a little, so she could drink from the straw. Ismael tried to open her
eyes again, both this time and focus returned. The bedroom looked a lot
brighter than it used to be, the high ceiling seemed taller and the oak
panelling was glossier. Ismael thought her mind is playing tricks; until she
saw Lady Doris, her Uncle’s cleaner. Lady Doris saw Ismael had woken and
trotted over in her black polished courts, she was a heavy footed and big woman
with a piny that barely tied around her waist. Brown hair tied perfectly back
into a bun and a mole, mole Everest. That sat annoyingly on her chin; Lady Mole
Everest Ismael had named her. “My dear, glad yaw awake” Lady Doris spoke
in her farmer tongue. “Can
I get yaw anything? Perhaps a cuppa of tee!” Ismael had to stare into her brown
eyes, she be offended if Ismael glared at Mole Everest. She was about to answer
Doris but Reeves cut in. “I’d love a cuppa but Ismael won’t be
needing tea, four slices of toast would be better, wholemeal if possible, slow
energy releasing an all” Reeves grinned politely. “Yaw young people, worrying about what to
eat. Yaw are what yaw eat I say!” Doris happily patted her rounded stomach. “Well,
I Bette be on me way. I can’t let ye starve” Doris
left Ismael’s bedroom and Both, Ismael and Reeves, let out a small bundle of
laughter. Laughing hurt Ismael and she cough and she took a long slurp of the straw.
Doctor Reeves a family Doctor as well as friend of the family, she rolled up
her sleeves and fiddle in her large medical bag. Ismael noticed she had changed
her eye patch, instead of a white one to match her doctor’s uniform; it was
pink with a purple flower on it. Reeves told her how she lost her eye in an
accident while working in the army as a medical officer. Officer Cindy Reeves,
she was in her twenties then and never phased her, it only fuelled her career
into being want she always wanted to be, a Doctor. After a
good two minutes rummaging in her bag, she found the stethoscope. She tied up
her lovely grey, groomed hair and placed the stethoscope around her neck. Ismael
watched in admiration, minus a few faded tattoos on her wrists. “Right, how are you feeling?” Reeves
pulled out a thin pen like torched and flashed it into Ismael’s eyes. “Any,
dizziness, pains-” “No, just hung-over” Ismael groaned. “That would be the sudation in your
system, I had to sedate you” “That bad was I, I don’t even remember. I
know I had accident, a stupid mutt run out in front of me,” Ismael touched her
cheek just in case it was part of the dream. “Then I was home. Argue with Dean
and-” she stared over at her laptop. “I had an unknown email with attached
files regarding my sister. It went black after that” Reeves
checked her pulse and placed the cold plate of the stethoscope on Ismael’s
chest. “What did the email say?” Reeves enquired while listening to her heart. “Found her. Just found her” “Are you sure it is not spam?” Reeves asked
curiously. “I don’t know. I have a meeting with my
campaign today, if and when I am discharge from my bedroom of course,” Ismael
began to get a numb bum and tried to sit up more. “Dean has cancelled your meeting Ismael;
I don’t think he wants you out and about cantering with friends” Ismael gave
Reeves a face ready for murder. “Love, take it out with him not me” Ismael
stared away, towards the window. She hit the bed and growled while doing it. Reeves
sat in silence for a second, then began to gather her equipment. She has been
part of the Tyne family for a while now, sometimes she wished she never got so
involved but Ismael made that impossible. Reeves loved her job and the family.
The pager on Reeves belt started beeping, “That is my 0900 reminder, I have to go
and help an elderly now. Bowl problems again, soon that will be me” Reeves
tried to break the tension. “I shall tell Dean on my way out that you are hung
over and coherent” “Thanks Cindy” Ismael said, still looking
the other way. Reeves picked up her bag, went to the door, and stared back.
“Bye Ismael” Ismael
just sat there and boiled in her bed, furious at her Uncle Dean for cancelling
on her friends. She needed that meeting today, needed to share her news and
glimpse of light from whoever sent the email. She still had not seen the
attached files. She sat
up more in the bed and her mobile buzzed on bedside table. She picked it up and
flipped it open. It was a text message from Mel. Mate. What happened? Ismael text back and told her to meet her,
bring everyone else and the meeting will proceed as planned. Ismael carefully
move her body to the edge of her bed, placed both feet on the cold wooden
floor. The room started to spin but she held it together and drank the rest of
the water. This is beyond a joke; I am
not being housebound. She thought. A plan formed in Ismael mind she had not
done it in a long time, sneaking out brought some fond memories. © 2011 Stef OutsidersAuthor's Note
