UntitledA Story by UnexpectedreamerFear We were all afraid of what would happen next. Yesterday was a normal day, or so we thought. We all got up and went off to work thinking the world was still the same. Little did we know that everything was going to change. Today, we are all hiding in our shadows. Forever watching each other’s eyes making sure they aren’t theirs. They came for us, all of humanity in one sweeping motion the eructated millions of people. They were here all along, patiently waiting. It was a very unlikely signal; the sky was dark for days. We had lost all concept of time because we did not see the sun in days. This was their signal, something lost to us. We walked in the dark lit streets wandering to our mundane jobs. They came after us like wolves. The many versus the few, they would prey upon small groups of people allowing others to escape. Once they fed on human flesh they would then gain the strength needed to attack a larger crowd. I was one of the lucky ones; I escaped before they ate my family. Hiding in a bomb shelter I made the year before. My family did not heed my message to hide out. No instead they followed the government’s no good advice and went outside. The government had signed my family’s own death warrant along with thousands of others. Know all I can do is sit in this room and wait for the screams to stop. I am not sure how long I have been here waiting but it seems like hours. I did not install a clock in here to make note of the time but I want to keep track of the silence as I hear it. So far there was a brief moment of silence. The whole world was quiet, morning the life of the many. I am sure God is crying, if he is still around. The silence is not what scares me most about this situation. I am afraid of the dead people. These things come out of nowhere and drink the blood of the victim, but they are not vampires who must wait for complete dark. See they attacked us when it suddenly became daylight. This is unheard of for the dead. In a way, we all know how to deal with a vampire. Place some garlic around your neck, get some holy water and some silver and we will all survive. But no, we get sent some misshapen thing, which feeds off of living blood. I see the skepticism in your eyes, but these things are no vampires. My bomb shelter has one feature I have yet to use. It can become a one way glass window. I can peer into the world and see what the exact cause is from these creatures. But I am so afraid to see what is really going on. The bodies of my family are somewhere behind these doors and I don’t think I can’t face their death and the fact that I was not here to protect them. That is one of my soul purposes in this life, to protect them and now they are gone. Slowly, I wander around my heaven attempting to remember the layout in my brain. I am so unsure of what powers these creatures may have. All of a sudden the screams stop. I rush to the control panel waiting for the screams to begin again. I wait for what seems like hours and then decide to push the button. This button will show me the horror behind my door. I might see all the creatures still feeding off my family, or I might encounter nothing but blackness. The Light My small room filled up with light and I saw that I hit the wrong button. Pressing the correct button I let the scene around me unfold. My two children were on the floor but they appeared to be just fine. They were laying on the ground like they were sleeping. My wife was besides them holding them in an embrace. It is almost like they are letting me know everything is just fine. The rest of the house is covered in blood. Whose I am not sure but I know that my family is fine. As I watch my family to make sure no harm was done to them, one of the creatures appears in front of the bomb shelter looking in. I am unsure of if they can smell me but petrified I slowly move to the opposite wall. Watching and waiting for the creature to pass. Instead more come to the door, almost as if they sense that I am in here, alive and waiting. The light is on in the bomb shelter and as more creatures surround me, I get scared that maybe they don’t smell me but the sense the energy of this room. I walk towards them daring them to make a move towards me. But they remain motionless in front of the door. Then I turn off the light of the shelter and the creatures move as if the trance they were just in is over. One by one they leave the room; completely oblivious to me. As they leave the room I decide that now is the time to grab my family. You may think this is a little delayed but I needed to make sure they were alive or dead. If they were alive I did not want them in the same room as those creatures. I knew venturing out to grab them would put us all at risk but I could not help but think they would do it for me. Hopefully, the creatures are drawn to the power of light. This might help me get my family to safety. I knew the risk it was to expose my position in the house. But I hoped that it wouldn’t backfire on me. Slowly, I opened the door and peered around looking for them. They seemed to have moved out of this area of the house. I got on my hands and knees and started to crawl towards my family. This whole time my family did not move a single muscle. I feared the worst for them, but I knew I could not leave them dead or alive to these creatures. I had yet to understand what they were and why they were attacking us. Crawling towards my children I heard a noise come from the other side of the room. I turned my head frozen waiting for it to come to me. I waited for what seemed like hours and decided that it lost interest in me. So I continued crawling to my family. They were only five hundred feet from the bomb shelter but they seemed like miles away from me. I touched my wife, she groaned. She moved her head towards me with tears in her eyes. Her eyes looked normal and I knew there was hope for my family. I moved towards the children hoping the same could be said for them. But when I touched them both of them stayed frozen to the ground. I looked for a pulse on each of them, sadly I found none. I got up and looked around the living room. It was empty of them and I grabbed my wife and carried her to the shelter. She was bleeding badly and I had no idea where she was bleeding from. But I knew I couldn’t check on her until I got the kids in here with us. So I left her in the shelter and made my way towards them. They were both so small, my identical twins. They were five years old, a boy and a girl, Samantha and Samuel. I picked up Sammy and brought her into the shelter telling my wife everything will be ok. As I went out to get Samuel, I heard the noise from the other room. Scared I knew they were coming back. As I grabbed Samuel he moaned softly. But to them it was loud enough for them to enter the room. Samuel was moving his whole body and all you could hear was his body rubbing in the blood on the floor. The sound was so loud that I knew we were discovered. But as they turned around the corner I saw it was my neighbor, Bryan. I waved at him and he came over near me. He picked up Samuel and came into the bomb shelter with me. “Aaron, you need to see what’s going on out there. Did you see them yet?” said Bryan. “I came straight here, Bryan. I needed to check on my family and see if they were safe.” Slowly Aaron walked over to his wife to see where she was bleeding from. She was still in her nightgown from the night before. Aaron knew it meant that they must have come in earlier before the kids went to kindergarten. The kids weren’t even dressed yet. Why didn’t they make it to the bomb shelter? We specifically made the room for situations like this. Lately, there have been a great amount of threats against the United States. No one felt safe, everyone watched everyone. Ironic because we did not expect this to happen, no one saw this coming.
“Aaron, why don’t you get some rest? After this long day we have had we need to make sure we rest. I will keep an eye on Adrianna for you. If anything happens I will wake you up. Try and get sleep. It’s essential that we rest.” Said Bryan. “Make sure you keep an eye on the twins as well. I couldn’t bare it if something happened to them as well. They are my everything, enough has happened today. We don’t even know what these creatures are and here they are killing and murdering us. I just wish we had more intell on who they are and why they are here. I don’t want to spend the next couple of years living in fear for my family” said Aaron. “ Lets take it one day at a time. They have seen to have left this area. Get some rest and then we will try and get your family medical attention. We will take shifts tonight and tomorrow we will see what is going on during the day. They need to rest at some point. They can’t just walk around and feed. All creatures need rest. Go to sleep Aaron, I will watch your family for you.” Aaron walked to the top of the bunk in the bomb shelter and crawled up. He was asleep in an instant and Bryan walked over to Adrianna. Her breathing was shallow and she was moving around. She was coming around to this world and she might has some information that could inform Bryan of these creatures. Bryan knew that the government was working on something lately. Something which was going to change the American society, but something Bryan didn’t understand was what did reproduction have to do this? These creatures eat humans and for what reason? His pay grade was not enough to learn that information but he did know someone that could. Aaron’s family could not stay in the bomb shelter, Bryan knew that much. Bryan also knew he couldn’t move them out of the shelter. Aaron would kill him and he needed Aaron alive to help him end this. Slowly, Bryan fell asleep leaving the creatures of the dark surrounding him. © 2013 UnexpectedreamerAuthor's Note
