My 'This I Believe' EssayA Story by CalypsoCould you please help me edit this?I’m not sure if I believe directly in karma, I’m not sure if I believe that only bad things happen to good people or vise versa, but I am sure that I believe in the card theory. I call it a theory because it is. It is nothing more then a speculation that helps me keep my head high. Back in ninth grade a raven haired, passionate English teacher introduced me to the idea that life is like a deck of cards. Right before class this teacher would write a quote on the board. The objective was to have the students write about how the quote made them feel, or what it made them think. I was always the one in class to take great joy out of the discussions that happened because of these quotes. Before I had never thought about life in such terms, but the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. In a complete set there are four aces, four two and four of every other type of card. When that deck is shuffled we never know where the ace is, or where the two is. So then you can think of the happenings of life like drawing one of those cards. An ace represents something good, and a two represents something bad. There is no particular card game I have in mind; I just take the card at face value. Not to self-pity but life has been tough for me so far. The sadness and despair I felt for years became less heavy when I thought about what my teacher said about life and a deck of cards. I knew deep down that if I waded though the strong, negative emotions there would come a time where life would be easier. If I held on I believed I would draw an ace. Along with this belief I know all good things most came to an end. Years from now I will come upon a trial worthy of a three or two but I know that will pass because my life is like a deck of cards and within time I’ll draw a bigger and better card. © 2011 Calypso |
