August 13A Chapter by CalypsoAugust 13 I was as nervous as I could be. Belle wrote me a note so I could get out of music therapy thirty minute early to get ready. I went back to my room and neatly went through my drawers until I found my dress clothes. Sunday I had packed three different skirts, three tops and two pairs of flats. There are no mirrors in the rooms so I was left guessing if something flattered me or made me look bigger. I could feel my palms becoming warm and moist. As I held the sheet music I could tell my grip was tightening, causing wrinkles to appear where me hands were. Ten till came and I felt hardly prepared, but I knew if I showed up late it would be held against me. When I came into the room there was a small keyboard by the window with an uncomfortable looking stool. Standing the room was two guys in business suits. I clutched to the door “I’m sorry I must be in the wrong place.” One of the men looked at the other and turned to me. “Who are you looking for?” “I…I don’t know.” I just realized that Belle didn’t tell me who I should look for. The other guy elbowed the one who spoke in the chest. “This might be Miss Howard.” I could tell they weren’t even going to try to pronounce my first name. I stepped into the room, little less timid, and responded “Yes, I’m Aelge Howard.” The one who spoke originally stepped forward and stuck his hand out. “Nice to meet you Miss Howard. Set up and start when ever you’re ready.” I couldn’t have sat on the stool because it was so unstable but I was able to make it look like I was by bending my knees. I started playing and all stress seemed to melt off of me. When the song was over both men stared at me gravely. “How long have you played Miss Howard?” “Many years.” “You’re very talented. Now what we most know is that you’re willing to help out during music therapy? Your job as an intern isn’t going to be a jolly one.” Dazed I answered, “Naturally. I’ll enjoy the different pace.” “So then I heard from Belle that you are willing to work for us if we put you through college. If that is the case then we’ll see how you do as an intern. Remember now that you have to be an intern for two years before we’ll help you out. How old are you? What grade are you in?” “I’m 16. I’ll be a junior in the fall.” “Just perfect. By then we’ll know how good you really are and we’ll hire you as an ascendant for the current music therapist and we’ll put you through college. How does that sound?” I folded trembling hands in my lap. “Very nice. Thank you sir… sirs.” They both smiled and nodded politely. “Well then Miss Howard we welcome you a board.” I was trembling as I stood up and held out my hand. They both shook it and left the room. After straightening up I tucked the sheet music under my arm and made my way to the library. I found Belle standing in the hallway ten feet from the door of the library. She looked like she was waiting for someone and when I saw her muscles relax I knew she was waiting for me. “How did it go?” I couldn’t hide my giddy smile “They sign me on as an intern on the spot.” Belle smiled widely “I bet your dad is going to be happy.” Belle placed her arm around my shoulder as if I was a small child. © 2011 Calypso |
