The stars beneath us

When they first visited

I was alone in my backyard

With the grass and sand

They came down

In their shiny metal ship

Air and grass

Bowing before it

Sand blowing about

And my brain

And my mouth

Open

And awestruck

And i saw them

Land

In my backyard

Mine

And as a small little bridge

Extended

They slowly walked out

They looked

Just like any of us

But so different

They had

No darkness

In their eyes

No lines

In their hands

Their bodies

Were like

A single shape

Almost no grooves

Nor holes

Nor mark

Decorated their skin

They had no fingers

But two solid

Tentacles

Which all they touched

Seemed to simply

Stick to

Like

Just their desire

Lifted it

And they came toward me

Shuffling with

Such fluidity

Such smoothness

I asked

If I had ever known

How to walk

And yet they approached me

As if

I were them

And they spoke to me

In my tongue

They greeted me

And asked if this was earth

And I whispered yes

And they turned around

In amazement

And they ran about

My backyard

Examining every

Little leaf

Little sand grain

And me

And I shouted

That this was my land

And they apologized

And asked if

They could study it

And I agreed

Pretending to be upset

That they had not asked

But really

I had not understood

How they loved the grass

And one that studied me

Spoke to me

And we spoke of much

And its eyes

Were like two suns

Shining bright

Brighter than my boy’s eyes

And he

Had only known

Two weeks

And it spoke to me of our technology

And I explained the most

Complex thing

I knew of

And it seemed

Confused

Asking if I was certain

That it was all we had

And I replied:

I suppose.

And one of those few lines

It had

Curved downward

Which made

All those other

Plastic things

Stare at it

For so long

And they asked if it was alright

And it said of course

And that otherwise was impossible

And I questioned that

And it told me of how

They had not known

Displeasure

Or

Anger

Or

Pain

Or even hate

In centuries

And it showed me

A strange object

Like

A metal halo

With an interior

Outlined by this

Green fluid

And

Textures and shapes

And sounds

And even a color

I had never known

It proved to me that it worked

It took some object

I could not fathom

And sliced its arm in half

And then I blinked

And his arm was reattached

And the object gone

And it just

Smiled at me

Yet I was never so disturbed

And I begged them

To leave

They asked why

And asked if I would like the halo

Which I took

And smashed

Watching it leak

And quickly rust

And finally

Die

In

My yard

They simply laughed

And went back to their ship

And wished me well

And I watched their ship

Fly off

To distant stars

So easily

Like

The ship did not even use fuel

Or

It did not even move

But the world did

For the sake of it

I gazed upon my hands

And

Went inside

To my sink

And washed them

For the rest of the night

And in the morning

I just sat on my couch

And i looked upon

The stars beneath us
