A Styrofoam Cup in the Ocean

A Styrofoam Cup in the Ocean

A Poem by KeelyJane

She drifts through the universe
A styrofoam  cup in the ocean
Her claims are of superior things
A descendant of fine china

Nothing singes modesty
Like pretentious, not quite tupperware
She shines, but only through her glasses
She's a styrofoam cup in the ocean
Floating while gloating how she swims

How long before the tides go?
Surely some day she must happen upon the shore
As the bottle she isn't and speechless
No message in the styrofoam cup

This is mostly an inside joke between a couple friends but I still thought to share it because there is a hint of metaphorical value. Hope you like....

Absolutely captured it. But coming ashore without your pretense is dying I think. And, if anything is senseless it is worrying about death when one should be living life to the fullest. Like always I really enjoy your stuff Keely Jane, it dares talk of styrofoam cups which clearly has very little to do with what is truly you. Thanks for being real, for daring to be a styrofoam cup in the ocean of sad realism. I am glad it is only real, there is so much more to us than stark reality.

I think this is one of the nicest you've done, because it carries a metaphor the whole way through, a metaphor that might be familiar, but which is presented in a new way and arrives at a good conclusion.

Nice writing here. Best wishes.

I think this is really interesting, because when you start with the image of a styrofoam cup floating through the ocean most readers expect aimlessness and drifting, but you've sort of turned that idea on its head. I really enjoyed this, very neat.

Inside and out this is more than a personal expression, it should be a life one. Nice

Like this one, love the tupperware reference, brought it all together! We all have aspirations to be something that perhaps we can't be...there's only one way but up from styrofoam! Much enjoyed.

You could be a styrofoam cup easily crushed when stepped on, a plastic coke bottle transparent maintains its form or a chunk of driftwood. Nice piece!

I really like the comparisons here and how you explain through imagery. A very nice piece that seems to hint at the emptiness of hiding the truth behind lies.

I'd say the metaphorical value is very high in this piece...I read this a few times and it brought different ideas to mind with each reading...nice piece Keely :)
