Beneath The Snow

Beneath The Snow

A Poem by Victoria Preston

Silent footsteps in the snow,
Feeling nothing on the climb.
Barefoot, and running now
Desperately making up for lost time.

Breath - a white cloud hanging,
Lips cracked and dry.
Impossible to know that life is changing
Not caring about the how or why.

Thoughts fly by, like the buzzing of summer bees,
Triumphantly heralding their lead.
She runs on blindly, and never sees
The traps that lie ahead.

The student who was never listening
To the song of the experienced one.
Headlong on the ice, so glistening,
A momentary thought, then all is gone.

Fingertips, blue but never quitting
Roaming the ice for someone they know.
The north wind blowing, unrelenting
As the final heartbeat vanishes beneath the snow.
