Song of RegretA Poem by Victoria Preston
Bathed in moonlight, sepia toned,
As candle flickers and incense burns, She chews her nails and stares before her Desperately searching for her love. She yearns To show him her unrelenting apology For all she did to make him leave. As wax drips down, a tallow heartbeat She lingers with her past, bereaved. Head in hands, she listens vaguely To sentimental music played. Her heart now pines for love, once treasured, Her soul she's all but wept away. For night after night she sits and wonders If broken moments may adhere, And wishing she had kept her mouth closed And smiled more, and kissed more and held him near. Her place now taken, by another More worthy of his love than her, Who tastes his mouth and feels his body And knows that what she has is rare. The new love gives him all he yearns for Shows him adoration, blessed And when, in time, he recalls the other She will hold him to her breast. So back into the room we wander, Watching love die in this place And shadows dance like men in ribbons Across the weariness on her face. A stolen promise of love unending Through the window now does glide, And with it goes her truth, her spirit On this night, when her soul has died. He will never know her sorrow, Or hear her screams into the night Or understand the ache inside her Or feel the need to end her plight. For she is lonely for his warm comfort His lips left tingles she still feels The scent of him is all around her The degradation never heals. So at the birth of each new morning She attempts to write her song To tell of how her sorrow lives on And how she knows she did him wrong. As nightfall wanes into a new day And the candle burns its last She dances to her mournful music And lives forever, in her past.
