By My Own Hand

By My Own Hand

A Poem by Victoria Preston

As melancholy slides under the door
Raping sweet ecstasy from the room,
My heartbeat slows a little more
And I feel the strangulation of doom.

Silence mocks with thunderous roar
Echoing emptiness in my ears.
A sealed fate for evermore
Will be my guide through the coming years.

His voice has gone, his touch, his scent,
My skin screams out its pointless plea,
Never knowing where my lover went
Or if he will ever return to me.

On guilty cheeks my tears now rest
No other may be blamed for this.
I cannot say I tried my best
To soothe his pain with my gentle kiss.

I vomitted words, my hatred burning
Into his head, his mind still reeling.
My bile and vitriole entombed his yearning
Never caring for my love's own feeling.

And now the silence echoes still
Across this barren, empty land.
My penetrating scream, so shrill
A declaration of misery, caused by my own hand.
