The Hardest Word

The Hardest Word

A Poem by Victoria Preston

Silence
Dead air on the phone line
Just your breathing
Nothing more.
No laughter,
No romantic words of love,
No making plans,
Just the absence of you.
Like insanity's own choir.
Just a void
Unfillable,
Unerring,
Where your words once were
And now,
With the sound of a receiver being replaced,
I can do nothing
But whisper,
"Goodbye".
