ReturnA Poem by Victoria Preston
Will his fingertips feel the same as yours, as they move up and down my spine?
Will his eyes twinkle, like yours did, when I ask him to be mine? Will my heart skip a beat when I feel his body moving near? Will his breath, upon my neck, make my whole world simply disappear? Will my breathing begin to falter as his tongue slowly explores me? Will I feel myself trembling as he pushes me closer to ecstacy? Can he take me to the places that your fingers took me first? Can the movement of his flesh on mine ever quench this thirst? Will he ever stop me picturing that it's you who shares my bed? When I close my eyes beside him, will it still be you who fills my head. When I cry out, at that glorious moment, will it be his name in the air? Or must I only ever dream that one day, you will, once again, be there? Can I hold him in my arms and feel the warmth I felt from you? Will I know the joy of wanting him and feel he really wants me too? Or am I being foolish in thinking happiness could return? That I may, once again, feel the sweetness of all I truly yearn. Your presence still surrounds me here, in all I see and do. The echo of your time with me, still clouds my blinkered view. I cannot glimpse the future while I know you're there with her. The knife that twists, deep in my heart, this pain I must endure. This miserable hope I drown in, that she breaks your heart once more Leaving you a broken man, your dreams crashing to the floor. For I will wait a lifetime to take my place with you, my dear. To hold your hand and caress you and to tell you there is nothing left to fear. She never did deserve you, she proved that when she fled From the sanctity of your marriage, to another's waiting bed. So now when you lay with her, is it you she wants to touch, Or is it his body that calls to her, that she adores so much? Has she come back out of duty or to win a cruel game? Knowing that, in her presence, you and I can never be the same. She wanted the love of another, you were not the one she chose. You lived in romantic limbo whilst, beside him, she did repose. She loves him still, we both know this, so can you now move back To a past that lives in shadow where your trust she did attack? Can you move beyond the idea that her heart belongs to him? That she came back for convenience, her outlook seemed so grim. She has nothing left to offer; your wife is no longer there. She can alter her appearance - her dress, her size, her hair. But, beneath it all still lingers, the knowledge of her deceit When she left you for another, when her world was incomplete. Can you look into the mirror and know that your choice is true? That this was not for convenience, and that it's the best thing for your son and you. Can you climb into your bed at night and hold her as you do. And not imagine me laying there, feeling the love I feel for you? Can your taste her as you tasted me and want her just the same? Are you certain that it's love she feels and you're not just playing in her game? Look at your hand and see mine there, where it was always meant to be, And when you realise she's not the one, return, my love, to me.
