Happy New Year

Happy New Year

A Poem by Victoria Preston

The sun brightly heralds the dawn of a brand new decade
As another year fades into obscurity.
The echo of an existence, long since departed,
Leaves me hollow, but not lacking in security.

No more for me, the endless, dreamless nights.
No more the anguish and pain of a love, desperately lost.
With the birth of a new year comes fresh hope,
And now I smile in memory, and gladly pay the cost.

Twelve months of friendship, of lust and desire.
Then three months of misery, sadness and fear.
Endless hours of smiling, and skipped heartbeats
That still keep me warm, although you're no longer near.

I took another's place, and merely kept it warm
Held your hand and walked you through the pain.
And when she came to reclaim her rightful place
I was left alone, a shadow in the rain.

But the happiness in your voice, and the smile upon your lips
Tells me more than any words could do.
You love her unconditionally now,
And she has restored the former you.

Over this past year, I've watched you grow,
From a shy man into a beacon of light.
I hope my love has helped you there,
That it was my spark that made you shine so bright.

Let her bask in the warmth of your love now,
And give you the family you craved so badly.
Let the joy resound around your home
And, if it does, I step back gladly.

For this is MY new decade.
This is where my story finally begins.
This year will see me go from strength to strength,
And my self confidence will cleanse my sins.

My faith is stronger now than ever,
I can believe in myself, finally.
I can put aside all that has gone before,
And forget about being angry.

I have you to thank for that, my love,
For helping me face up to my past.
For laying my ghosts to rest, one final time
And freeing my spirit, a last.

So, I raise a glass to you now, my friend,
The one who will always have my heart,
And wish you love and luck and joy
And the life you always wanted, from the start.

May she love you as exquisitely as I do
And want you with a passion like mine.
May her knees turn to jelly whenever she sees you
And in your arms, she loses all track of time.

May your name roll from her tongue
With a quiver, as her breathing wavers.
May she hate every second you're apart from her,
Making each moment together one she savours.

But when you're alone at your wheel
And your mind wanders, as it may do,
Think of me sometimes, and I guarantee
I'll be sweetly thinking of you.

Happy New Year.
