The Bridge

The Bridge

A Poem by Victoria Preston

Far below, the chasm opens up.
The far side a pinpoint in the distance.
No chance of traversing this gaping wound
Which hold her in misery and its persistence.

Dark skies move swiftly overhead,
Thunder clouds watching her as she
Nears the slippery edge, and contemplates
The leap. Her companion? - her insanity.

A final glance back at her love
That wants her nevermore,
And a single tear that descends,
Is just a memory upon a dusty floor.

A step closer, a frightened gasp,
She swallows hard in fear.
As rocks fall down into the gloom
She wishes he was near.

A hand appears by her trembling side,
She takes it willingly and holds on tight.
An apparition so sweet and tender,
As the bridge comes into sight.

A footstep in time and space,
And a smile that ends her suffering.
Fingers entwined in safety
As they cross to a new beginning.

As she stands, head high, on the other side
A place she thought was lost,
She turns to thank this stranger
Who cared for her the most.

His fingers move away her hair
So her face is lit by moonlight.
His kiss electrifies her soul
And burns like a star, so bright.

Dare she dream that sorrow has ended
And a new chapter has begun?
The clouds disperse, and in his arms
There is only the warmth of the sun.

Two sets of footprints are evident now,
And she smiles as she senses him above.
No longer chained by despair and sin
But cherished and held in love.
