Dreaming

Dreaming

A Poem by Victoria Preston

A momentary glance sideways and she sees him
Silhouetted against the wall in the fire light.
Just a shadow from her past, echoing in her heart,
A memory of lost love, she needs to get her through the night.

She turns down the music and listens to herself breathe,
Rhythmic pattern of an existence that pitifully lingers.
Stroking her own cheek, head tilted with a soft smile
Wishing it was his breath on her face, and his fingers.

Turning off the light, she stares at the moonless sky.
Winter clouds hanging, pregnant with the promise of new snow.
Holding his pillow close to her, imagining his warmth,
Nostalgia returns to keep his flame aglow.

Drifting gently into slumber, deep and protective,
Her pain subsides for a few hours more.
Morning will bring anxiety and sorrow back to her
The  resonance of grief, tapping at her door.

But for now she sleeps, and is no longer alone;
He is with her in her dreams, laying down beside her.
Letting her know that she is loved, just for a moment,
Her head on his chest, his heartbeat once again, pulsating inside her.
