Always Been You

Always Been You

A Poem by Victoria Preston

Through cobwebbed corridors, my memory brings you back
From an age long gone from time and space.
Moments in my history I had all but forgotten
Now I watch as the mist is lifted from your face.

We used to dance, your strong arms around me,
Protecting me for a decade or more.
Hot breath, your penetrating gaze,
Passion bubbling to the fore.

We were one then, two hearts in unison;
Perfectly locking jigsaw pieces.
You finished my sentences and thought my thoughts.
Two members of a whole new species.

We guarded each other from the world outside.
An impenetrable force that none could defeat,
Many tried, but none could surpass you
They shrank away in timid retreat.

When you left me, a shattered shell of humanity,
I thought my days had come to an end.
Struggling to get through each passing day
Without the love of my one, true friend.

And now you've come back, that smile still there
Grinding my defences into the dust.
My heart still pounds when I hear your voice,
My passion still aglow with untempered lust.

None has ever made me feel this way,
As if the world has melted; it just disappears.
And as your hand reaches out for mine,
I feel that familiar sting of frightened tears.

So my fear is back, with new questions for you.
Will you break me again, if I let you back in?
Is this just a flesh on flesh need, or
Have you missed my mind as much as my skin?

So we sit and talk, and the years fall away.
Catching up, learning to know each other anew.
Fingers touching, and eyes locked again
As we finally embrace, I know it's always been you.
