Under A Different Sky

Under A Different Sky

A Poem by Victoria Preston

There was a time when yours were the only words worth hearing,
A moment when your hand was the only one I'd hold.
An eternity stretched out before us, together,
So why did I put myself out there, in the cold?

If I had only known then what I know today
The choices I made would have been a different matter.
The mistakes of youth, like a tarnished mirror,
Do not just break, they splinter and shatter.

Our lives, since then, took different routes.
The years passed, and new memories have been made,
But the dreams of you have lingered in my heart,
An echo resounding like a favourite song played.

Under a different sky, we may well have made it.
Made each other happy through all these years.
And, if you ever think of me still, like I think of you,
The pain and the joy are represented by tears.

With the passage of time, maturity takes a front seat,
And the whims of a young girl can fade;
Yet, the yearning for you is as real as it was then,
And I only wish I'd known better and stayed.

So, can you forgive me for the pain that I caused you?
Can you smile when you remember my face?
And should your life change, and you find that you need me beside you -
Call my name and I'll take back my place.
