A Broken Heart

A Broken Heart

A Story by Bridgett

She's alone tonight.  She finds that comforting, yet so sad.  If anyone saw her like this, they would think she wouldn't make it.  She longs to be curled up into someone's arms...his.  Another tear falls.  She quickly wipes it away, but her body hasn't come close to expelling the pain.  A flash of a memory comes back to her mind that sends her heart racing, aching.  They are standing by a deserted road under the stars.  She is looking at the constellations, pointing out each one.  She looks over at him to tell him to look and finds him staring at her, a smile on his face.  They just stare at each other.  She is having trouble breathing now and clutches at her waist to hold herself together.  Her eyes clench together as the memory of him taking her hand in his plays in her mind.  The tears stream down her saddened skin as she remembers the night his lips finally met hers after so many years...  The memories stop as abruptly as they started.  She slowly opens her red eyes to reality and dries them.  Climbing into bed, she drapes the covers over herself and hugs the pillow to her face.  She vows not to fall asleep crying tonight.  Closing her eyes so tight, she clings to the hope she so desperately needs.  As her heart slows down and her breath becomes steady, her eyes unclench and one tear falls across her face to the soft pillow.
