The deteriorating substance of the social standard

The deteriorating substance of the social standard

A Poem by below-AVERAGE

You wake up in a [{padded}] cell,
no windows
no escape.
But come to think of it...
You've been here all along,
haven't you?
The walls are the world...
Constantly tearing you down,
always challenging your ideas,
and making you out to be a fool
to be who you are.
They tell you what's "cool"
they know what's "right"
You waste away here,
you die here.
But in the process,
you start to wonder,
is it really worth it
to not be the one
who is different?

Great job isolating the words no escape to accent the point. I love this one for so many reason. First, I love your style and word choice. Second, I love the subject and viewpoint. and the last sentence brings it home.

This piece has nice dark tone of menace throughout. I imagine this voice, like some twisted captor of a horror movie, piped through the speakers, and the captive is losing his/ her mind. Like a steady drumbeat of Chinese water torture. Thanks for posting this, I look forward to more.

Regards,

E
