Chapter Three: Sleepy Serpent

His whole body, caught in fear and revulsion froze as the snake moved relentlessly upward, and he could hardly contain the hysterical scream that rose in his throat as the forked tongue tickled feather-like over his face.
The snake turned, coil after coil, and slithered under his blanket; when he opened his eyes it was to see the tail give a final derisive flick as it vanished under cover. Now he could feel it surging over the lower half of his body, and he prayed meaninglessly, frantically, 'God, no, no! God, oh God!' Then abruptly all movement ceased and he was aware that it had settled down in the hollow between his knees.
