On My Honor

On My Honor

A Poem by Derek ubuntu Dunham

Fifty stars huddled in the corner
Segregated from the red and white stripes
that are as separate as the polar politics
this country has come to
embrace.

Oh, say can you see
...how platforms are leaving people behind?
...how our children are hungry?
...how our education system is underfunded?

We the people
deserve better.
We are in this together,
like it or not.

So, before you
marginalize more
or care even less..

(On my honor)

On my right shoulder
I wore an embroidered flag
faithfully

(I will do my best
to God and my country)

I promised.

I wear that flag
upside-down now
because I believe
my country is in distress.

I cannot wait to flip it back around.
