A meaning that I gather from this write is that things aren't what they seem. "snake's eyes". Snakes have forked tongues, and when calling someone a "snake" it usually means that they lie, they deceive, they essentially, metaphorically, slither.
Perhaps it's about not trusting someone, or that it's useless to follow your empty hopes?
I can't quite figure this out...it's bloody frustrating. Nevertheless, this is a definite favorite, And I'll be revisiting it again some day...
