The Girlfriend I Never DeservedA Poem by Paris HladThe Girlfriend I Never Deserved
I do not think that God Is every time about hugs and kisses
Sometimes He is like one of the undeserved girlfriends of my youth, One who had no reason to trust me and always insisted on my respect
Her stick, the withholding of her affection, Was equivalent in size to a reward She had no reason to offer In the first place.
When I did not fear her disapproval, She concluded that I did not love her Because fear is a component of respect, And respect is a necessary condition of love
If I did not fear the consequences of my bad behavior, I reduced her to the status of a fool or an affable sidekick,
And every time, she righteously declined to be my b***h. © 2023 Paris Hlad |
