All Birds Must Sing

All Birds Must Sing

A Poem by Paris Hlad

All Birds Must Sing

(Or Never Gainsay Chance)

Some birds will sing the songs of spring,

But never gainsay chance

I see them in a sunlit ring,

When life begins to dance "

A gilded flicker has a mate, a phoebe has a seed,

A noble hawk imbues the sky, a warbler shakes a reed

A starling hops behind a bloom; a robin lines her nest,

A chipping sparrow lifts its head and puffs its tiny breast

Some birds will sing the songs of woe,

The theme of every life

I see them in the frowns of day,

When being turns to strife

A gilded flicker as a care, a phoebe has a fear;

A hungry hawk has chicks to feed, a warbler strains to hear,

A starling riots in the brush, a robin drops a worm,

A chipping sparrow whistles loud

A threat it would confirm

But all birds sing in harmony

That one unending song "

It is but this: that life is change,

And they must sing along.
