Taking the Bait

Taking the Bait

A Poem by Paris Hlad

Taking the Bait

I carefully let you off the hook

Then, you let me off the hook -

And I like being off the hook

Because then I am free

To bait a hook for you,

Which I know you will take

Because you are, as I am,

Off the hook -

And only then can I take

The delicious bait you offer,

As I know that you know that I know

That you are impatient for me to take it.

(Which Is to Say)

My love is something

Like the glow

Of votive candlelight

That falls upon my secret book,

And reads it through the night …

And she is something like a hand

That holds a trembling star,

When it has fallen from the sky,

And loving goes too far.
