Had I died and gone to heaven?
Heaven was all white. Except for the angels.
“Lila… Lila...” The words penetrated my skull slowly. They were full of emotion. Shock, concern, fear. What kind of angel talked like that?
I focused more carefully, and figured out that Heaven looked a hell of a lot like my school’s cafeteria. And this angel… he looked a lot like someone I’d seen before.
“Lila! Say something! Anything!” There was an edge of panic in his voice. The Heaven idea faded away.
“Ga...briel?” Gabriel sighed in relief.
“I thought I’d lost you there,” he said, grinning. I was momentarily dazzled.
“I think I’ll be okay,” I muttered. I felt my face burn as I sat up, and realized that four or five tables of people were staring at me. I lay back down in embarrassment.
“C’mon, that’s not the attitude I want,” Gabriel muttered. I felt his hands close around my waist. He pulled me up. I felt dizzy.
“Lila, are you okay? Do you need anything?”
“I’ve got everything I need,” I whispered, still woozy.
“I can’t make you feel any better.”
“That’s because I already feel great,” I breathed. He let his arms down slowly. Without his support, I started to fall again. What had started all this? We’d been talking and, bam, outta no where, I can’t stand up? I mean, I was unlucky, but this? There was more chance of getting struck by lightning twice in the same spot.
Gabriel caught me a second after I was unbalanced.
“Maybe you ought to get to the office or something,” he suggested.
“Wherever you’re planning on going,” I mumbled sleepily.
With Gabriel’s support, I managed to get to the office. He explained briefly what had happened.
“Well, you may leave,” the secretary told him.
“She requested that I stay.” The secretary flashed my an annoyed look, and I made the most pleading look I could muster, then looked back at him.
“Oh, fine!” she muttered, defeated.
Gabriel sat down beside me.
“You know, you’d think we’d been friends for years...” he said as I rested my head on his shoulder.
“You’ve been in my life since I was born,” I assured him.
“You lost me...”
“I was born when I met you,” I explained.
“I think your head is actually screwed up.” He was grinning when I looked up at him. I don’t know how it happened either, but I felt like I was whole, complete. Even in my condition, I felt healthy. Nothing could touch me, not when Gabriel was with me.
