Bittersweet VictoryA Poem by The Violent Wolfrecounting what it was like when I went back to the US in '12.
The initial cheer,
"Yes! I'm going home!"
Followed by a,
"Damn. I'm leaving. Again."
It's a seemingly never ending cycle
The exhilaration of preparation
Graced with the grief of good-byes
It's a bittersweet victory
You've accepted your fate
But you don't have to like it
In your home country you're still
A foreigner
The weird one
An 'illegal alien'
Someone who's unlike
Everyone else in town
You're the one who Asks stupid questions
Doesn't understand popular phrases
Is astoundingly naïve and
Speaks a foreign language
That isn't French or Spanish
After you've settled in and
Have established a new routine
Don't forget to take a
Week or two off to relapse
And perhaps totally break down
Take your time remembering
All your friends
The adventures you had
The memories you made
On the other side of the world
Now get it out of your system
Cry, if you really must
Please, pull yourself together
And quit moping around in your room
It's time to move on.
