MorningA Story by LindsayA typical day viewed from an atypical perspective...Somewhere in the east the sun rose with a sigh. Yawning, the stars laid down their heads to sleep away the day. The moon cast a dubious eye at the new arrival. “A bit early this morning, aren’t we, Sol?” she asked, glancing at the celestial clock. “Ah, but you forget, Luna, summer is coming,” Sol answered. “It’s early hours for me until the solstice passes. What about you? Shouldn’t you be turning in?” “No,” Luna said, shaking her head. “I don’t get to clock off until nine this morning. You know what a crazy schedule I have.” The sun nodded. “Yeah, it has to be tough, not being able to stick with night or day.” “That’s not the half of it. These silly creatures,” she said, motioning toward the awakening humans below, “only think of me in terms of night time, so I’m completely ignored half the time. At least you get recognized the whole time you’re on shift.” “Recognized! Humph! What on earth do I need them to burn corn to me for? If I didn’t know better, I’d say it would do them more good digesting in their stomachs!” “Well, I’m just saying.” The spheres slid in their orbits as the day went on. Venus came into view. “Hey, there, Venus!” Sol called to the yellow planet. “Good morning, Sol! How are you today?” “Oh, I’m good. How’re the new organisms coming?” “Fine, I suppose. It’ll be a while until they’re sentient, though. Maybe another couple of eons. Hopefully, I’ll be able to keep Mars away from them long enough so they turn out to be a nice, gentle, loving race.” “Hey, Venus, speaking of which, have you heard about what he did a little while back?” Luna asked her. “No, what did he do?” “Well, you remember Bacchus, right? The fifth one in from Sol, here?” “Sure. Haven’t heard from him in a while, though.” “Yeah, well, that’s ‘cause Mars got into a fight with him and smashed him into a bunch of rocks.” “What?!?!” “Sorry to say, it’s true,” Sol said, gesturing. “Go look. Just a lot of asteroids, now.” Venus poked her head around Earth to see. “Oh, wow. That’s massive! Why does he always have to be such a warmonger?” “Yeah, I know,” Sol said, “I mean, boy, when I get my hands on that little creep…” “Who’re you calling a creep?” “Mars!” Luna exclaimed. “Now, look here, you just can’t go around destroying planets like that…” “Oh, put a sock in it!” Mars yelled. “I’m sick and tired of you all always ganging up on me like this! For your information, Bacchus had it coming! He was coming in on my orbit, like he owned the system!” “Hey, guys, what’s going on here?” The celestial spheres turned around to look at the newcomers. Pluto and Uranus stood there, arms crossed. “Look, I was there,” Pluto said. “Bacchus was definitely wobbling in his path. Almost knocked into Mars, here.” “Seriously, I don’t blame Mars for knocking him out. I probably would have done the same,” Uranus added. “Except, you do realize he was drunk again,” “Except, you do realize he still almost hit me,” Mars retorted, mocking him. “Drunk or not, though, at least he wasn’t as big of a numbskull as you are. Maybe I should bash you into another asteroid belt.” He shoved “Hey, guys, watch it,” Mercury said, quickly stepping in to intercede between the two. “Don’t tell me what to do!” Mars said angrily. He shoved Mercury, too. “Mars! We all know you have a temper, but listen! It’s not going to do anyone any good to fight. Let’s just talk this out...” Saturn said. In response, Mars simply shoved him as well, making him trip into the remains of Bacchus. “Whoa, whoa, whoa, let’s not fight here,” Jupiter said, pushing them apart. It didn’t work. He found herself knocked over, and angry. “C’mere, you little—” he started, raising a fist.
Miles below, the humans watched, bewildered, as eight planets, the sun, and the moon, appeared to engage in a massive brawl in the heavens. They shrugged. As long as it wouldn’t interfere with planting… © 2008 Lindsay |
